Concrete Rasied Beds

29/07/2014

Although I’m giving the main vegetable garden a break this year except for beans and sunflowers (both of which will help the soil) I did plant the concrete raised bed, since it is younger and I added compost last year. The strawberries in the middle did great, and I’m training them to grow along both sides of the concrete sides right now – or trying to! Although those strawberries did not taste as good as the ones that were actually in the raised beds, so I want to add compost to those in the autumn if what I have cooking now is done in time. I harvested the strawberries, garlic, lettuces, and greens already and am watching the carrots thrive, allowing the radishes to set seed (watch out for a fun post about that soon), and excited about one random broccoli plant that failed to do anything in the spring but looks like it wants to for fall. During the coming week I need to plant more carrots, lettuces and greens, and broccoli for an autumn garden. I’m always too burned out by the end of the summer to do much in autumn but since I took some time off from the veggies this year maybe I will still have some steam this year….

For taking a break from the veggie garden, you still have quite a variety! Hopefully you will still be gardening in fall! Love, Mom
